Problem-solving through NLP
During a drawing session, the teacher observed a student painting his drawing in black colour. She flipped through his drawing book and found all the pictures painted in black. She was perplexed. The innocence of the child and the black painting made her feel strange. She informed the school psychologist about the outlandish episode. The psychologist counselled the student, trying to discover the reason underneath the dark pictures, and the selection of the colour black.

The child's parents were called, and an attempt was made to find out if the child was experiencing any negative feelings or was upset about some event in the family. The counsellor also dug into the child's past. After hours of searching, it was realised that the child was not suffering from any mental illness. He only had black colour and hence painted all the pictures in black.
Hitherto, the world of psychology functioned similarly. The problem was rooted somewhere else, and the psychologist tried curing it elsewhere.
Usually, the psychologists, in the attempt to resolve the issues asked;
1. What went wrong? 2. Why did it happen?
I feel, even if we find answers to these questions, many times, the problem cannot be sorted out.
Sigmund Freud introduced an approach to decipher and cure the problem in the field of Psychology. For the last hundred years, different therapies are being developed on the very same fundamentals. The theory helps in understanding the root cause of issues, i.e., 'what is the problem?' and 'why is it occurring?' Comprehension of it smoothens the untangling of the enigma. Unfortunately, it does not help. We had to wait a hundred years to understand that the problem does not go away!
For example, if a person smokes, he is aware that the cigarette is injurious to his health (what went wrong). Let's say he started smoking to act cool in front of his group during college days (why it happened). Knowledge of both the queries will not lead to him quitting the habit of smoking. It might be impossible for him to do so. Similarly, numerous people in the world are informed about their choices and the elements that paved their decision to it, but unable to get hold of their situations.
The emergence of NLP gave a new direction to problem-solving. Instead of focusing on 'what?' and 'why?', it began to work on 'how?'
NLP began to explore how to work on the problem, what actions need to be taken to overcome it. Even today, Psychology studies a person suffering from depression, whereas NLP examines people who have fought their troubles and recovered. Therefore, NLP yields better results than psychology.
NLP scrutinised more than a hundred people who successfully recuperated from extreme phobias. It found the common thread between these people and developed a technique to cure the people suffering from phobias in a jiffy.
Therefore, we ask some different questions in NLP...
Now deliberate upon these questions. What do we want to know from these questions? What is it we are looking for? How shall we proceed towards a solution with these questions?
With the help of these questions, we try to understand the cognitive structure of the client's mind while he experiences the particular episode. Once we become aware of it, we can quickly change it by replacing it with a new structure. Thus the client then forms a new behaviour upon the same simulation.
In NLP, we believe that if we teach people to actively think differently, we can transform people in no time. If a person, while inspiring himself, begins to feel that self-motivation is difficult, this thought might become the biggest obstacle in the process. He will have to work on his primitive thought pattern. As soon as we understand how people think, then they can be taught a different style of ideation.
For example, once we understand how the brain functions when a person is frightened, we can alter the process of the mind and stimulate new behaviour. The person will prevail over his fear. NLP trains us in various tools to change our mindset. When you begin to think differently, you commence to behave differently and thus feel differently!
Remember, the idea that 'identifying why the problem occurred and how it happened will resolve it,' is much alluring, but it is not a practical approach. The tools and techniques found by NLP are useful, and with its help, life can be transformed smoothly and quickly. Though these NLP Tools & Techniques are considered as a pseudo-science, they are workable in real life.
