Story of 'Milton Model'
The Meta Model was followed by Milton model, which was based on Milton Erickson's hypnotic patterns. Milton Erickson was an American psychiatrist and psychologist. During his childhood, he suffered from polio which further led to paralysis. Doctors had lost hope in his medical condition. They believed he would kick the bucket soon.

One night when his health took the worst turn, he experienced auto-hypnosis. Erickson narrates, "I was in bed. Three doctors were talking with my mother. They said, 'He will die by morning.' I was enraged. How could someone tell a mother that her son would pass away soon? My mother walked to my bed. She stood beside me. I asked her to rotate the cupboard so that I could see the reflection of the courtyard through it. I longed to see the sunset again... My eyes were simply gazing at the blazing sunset. Nothing else was visible to my eyes. I watched the evening fade away, and then I collapsed."
According to Erickson, auto-hypnosis came to life during that sunset, when people believed he would take his last breath. He says, 'Our unconscious mind is wondrous. It always tries to resolve situations.' Milton model was carved on this very principle. Erickson experienced intense episodes of hypnosis, which made him a connoisseur of hypnosis.
Erickson's hypnosis techniques were so powerful that when he spoke to clients, their conscious mind would come to a halt, and the unconscious mind gets activated. All his suggestions would directly settle in the unconscious mind, imprinting permanently. And thus they would begin to change for good. The co-creators of NLP studied his language patterns and developed the Milton model.
Thus began the journey of NLP through modelling. Firstly, the meta-model frame came into existence by imitating the conduct of Virginia Satire and Fritz Pearl, then the Milton model by Erickson's enchanting hypnosis process. It allowed any human to produce similar results replicating their behaviour. In this way, NLP developed various frameworks by modelling talented and successful individuals in every field.
Acquiring any skill in NLP became effortless with the development of the modelling process. We can earn better results quickly with the help of NLP techniques. Some areas that NLP has wholly changed through modelling are,
1. Sales and Marketing Skills
2. Negotiation Skills
3. Teaching and training skills
4. Counselling and coaching skills
5. Management and Strategic Thinking Skills
6. Health and Sports
7. Leadership and Team building skills
Three essential elements to ingrain with regards to success modelling are,
1. One cannot entirely model a mastermind. A few aspects always get deleted, distorted or generalised.
2. Modelling must be result oriented. We shall know we are heading in the right direction when imitation leads to a similar outcome as of the talented mortal being.
3. Modelling is like sucking the marrow of the bone, leaving behind the residue. Yes, we absorb in all the positive and functional qualities of the individual, eradicating his/her limiting beliefs.
To model someone, few questions ought to be answered accurately;
1. Cognitive process - When an intellectual is applying the skills, how is the brain functioning?
2. Assumptions - What are the perceptions of the expert about the competency?
3. Values - What are his/her morals?
4. Physiology - What is the posture of the individual while employing his/her talent?
5. External behaviour - Is it imperative to focus on some essential external action?
6. Reference or Context - In which context is modelling expected?
These aspects of success modelling shall be discussed in the next blog.
