NLP provides answers about fundamental questions of 'Success Modelling', such as...
- How do we experience passion, confidence, joy, enthusiasm, etc.?
- What happens in our mind and body when we employ the skill brilliantly?
- How is it possible that two people, after experiencing the same event, form a different perspective about it, and try to validate their conclusions?
- How do we get emotional?
- How does our mind operate when we are happy or sad?

The structures created in the brain while feeling two contradictory emotions are same or distinct? If they are different, can we learn those structures? Is it possible to alter them?
At the same time, NLP analyses endowed individuals and try to explain their conduct by answering some primary questions, such as,
- Why do talented people produce better results than the rest?
- Do genius people have any particular brain structure?
- Can the quality that makes a person gifted be built?
In response to these questions, NLP serves a platter filled with tools and techniques. Learning them and training others to reproduce them can lead to exceptional results. It can transform you in a brief period. This is called 'success modelling'. It is the essential concept in NLP, based on which several method-systems have been designed.
'Modelling' studies the engagement of virtuoso and derives the frame of it. Then it develops various modes to imitate those frame and employ it in life to change from 'okay to wow!' In short, using simple tools of modelling aids improvement swiftly.
During the early days of NLP, two key models were built, the Meta-model and Milton model.
Story of the Meta Model:
Meta-model was developed by modelling two remarkable therapists, Virginia Satir and Fritz Perls. It is the synthesis of the skilful language used by the therapists. In the world of counsellors, these could effortlessly bring change in the life of clients. Where the psychologists took years to transform the lives of people, the two could achieve it in a jiffy. Many times people have walked in their session with a sad, depressed and angry face, and strolled with a broad smile and relaxed mind. Yes, they have cured people in just one sitting. Such enchanting is their process, only a swipe and all the accumulated troubles of years are washed out.
Virginia Satir was the most astounding and thriving family therapist of the era. She believed most of the times; people do not have any obstructions or difficulties. The problem lies in how they perceive their troubles. This has been her crux to resolve peoples' issues, and she has always been successful. For example, a girl, who despised her mother, sought counselling from her. She not only loathed her mother but also felt alienated with the rest of the family. She felt abandoned and lonely. This cynical and toxic mindset had crumbled her into gazillion pieces. She was disappointed, tired and broken. As she began with her therapy, her mental well being began to recover. In a few sessions, the girl who derided her mother before now saw a best friend in her. How did this magical transformation happen?
Fritz Perls, was a noted German-born psychiatrist, psychoanalyst and psychotherapist. He, on the other hand, transformed lives through 'Gestalt Therapy.' He designed the therapy style based on his experience and creativity. Perl said, 'I do what I like, and you indulge in what you like. I do not live to fulfil your expectation, and you don't exist to please me. You are you, and I am me. And if we meet by chance, it will be beautiful. If we don't, I cannot do anything about it.' In short, Perl believed that most times in life, sorrow, despair, worry, etc. are built because of our unrealistic expectations. On this very notion, he developed 'Gestalt Therapy' and revolutionised humans life. But how did this magic happen?
Richard Bandler and John Grinder (co-creator of NLP) began observing and examining Satire and Perl's therapy sessions. As they dived deeper in their methodologies, they realised that Virginia Satire and Fritz Perl, both used the language in a way that it brought incredible changes to the client's life. Their employment of words was smooth and accurate, hitting the clients at the right spot. The in-depth examination of their counselling sittings yielded a pattern and frame of the functionality of their language. When Bandler and Grinder applied these frameworks in their sessions, the results perplexed them. In a couple of therapy sessions, they could heal despair, anxieties, phobias, low confidence, negativity, etc. It was unbelievable, but they witnessed hundreds of people turn their life 360 degrees. Therefore, the language patterns used by Satire and Perl were used as the fundamental concept to develop meta-model. The meta-model basically explains 'how can we transform our own and others' lives using language '.
It was followed by another model called 'Milton Model'. We shall discuss 'Milton model' in the next blog.
