What is the Mind? Part 2

In this blog, we will first read about the four different events and will try to understand the definition of Mind:
1. You might have heard about mindfulness. In the last few years, more than 1000 books have been written on mindfulness. There are more than 500 useful websites about mindfulness. Over 15,000 research papers on mindfulness have been published in the last few years. Till now, hundreds of Facebook pages have been created on this topic. Thousands of articles have been written so far. You will get to see many YouTube videos as well about the same. Despite having so much information, it's a bit challenging to become mindful in everyday routine. Why does being mindful sometimes seem so difficult? What is your opinion about this? Think a little before moving ahead.

While reading, your Mind was thinking about mindfulness and was analysing the information that you were reading. According to the neuro-scientists, in this process, part of our brain called the prefrontal cortex, is involved.
Can we call this prefrontal cortex as our Mind?
2. You might have seen the movie 'Avengers Endgame.' In this movie, there is a villain called Thanos, who wanted to conquer the world. For this, he had to collect Infinity Stones. To restrain Thanos, all the Avengers, the superheroes, gather and wage war against him. Thanos is very powerful. Many superheroes are killed during the battle. In the end, Thanos is killed, but while killing him the Ironman, Tony Starker is also killed. As soon as Ironman is killed, the people in the theatre start crying and screaming, "Don't kill him, he's our sweetest superhero," and start shading tears as the movie ends.
To understand this whole emotional scene, 'Limbic System' becomes active. Human beings can't understand sensitive content if this part is not triggered.
Now the question is, should we call this 'Limbic System' as our Mind?
3. This was a regular evening for Mumbaikers, and the place was CST Railway Station, Mumbai. People were rushing in trains as usual. The entire CST railway station was crowded with people. There was a lot of noises of the trains. Announcements were made on loudspeakers about the arrival & departure of different trains. It was a common day in Mumbai. But suddenly something happened! People heard the gunshots. Within the next few minutes, the whole the railway station became a death chamber for many. People started running here and there to save their lives. It was a terrorist attack. Terrorists were firing bullets. In a few moments, the dead bodies piled up on the railway platform. Some were severely wounded and were crying in pain. It was the day of 26 November 2007! After this attack, the entire Hindustan was in shock.
When everyone was frightened and running around to save their lives, a part of their brain, called 'the Reptile Brain', was activated.
So now the question is: can we call this 'Reptile Brain' as our Mind?
4. Since so many years, I have been working as an NLP master trainer in the field of training and development. To reach this extent of success, I had to struggle a lot. The whole journey of becoming a trainer was not easy at all, and there were new challenges at every step. For example, after completing my MBA degree, I had offers from three companies to work as an HR manager. I would have got good packages. There was also security in that job. But still, I decided to become a trainer. There was no roadmap in front of me and no guidance, just a feeling within me that I can excel in in this field. Most of the times, we call it 'Gut Feeling.'
I only had this 'Gut feeling,' which encouraged me to fight in adverse conditions. Perhaps this Gut feeling was not in the brain because my brain was misleading me by asking various questions.
So now the question arises:
Shall we call that the Gut feeling which we feel in some part of our body as our Mind?
In short...
Shall we call the prefrontal brain as our Mind?
Shall we call the limbic system as our Mind?
Shall we call the Reptile Brain as our Mind?
Shall we call Gut Feeling as our Mind?
After all, what shall we call as "Mind"?
Taking into consideration what so ever we have read so far, we can draw two conclusions about Mind.
1. The Mind is not a material thing, that we can touch.
2. There is no specific place of Mind.
Then, can there be any definition of the Mind?
As per scientific evidences available till date, we can say that "the mind is energy and the flow of information." Let's think little about two words- 'Energy' and 'Information.'
Energy: What are our thoughts? Are our thoughts concrete? Can we touch our thoughts? No. But still, our thoughts seem very animated, because our thoughts are made of energy. Our thoughts are embodied forms of energy.
Information: As we set out for the morning walk, the fragrance of jasmine comes with a pleasant air & freshens our Mind & Mind. As soon as that fragrance goes inside the body, the Mind gets information about that smell. And in this way our mind exchanges information.
In short, the energy flowing continuously within us and the exchange of information can be called Mind.
We will see this interpretation in detail in the next blog.
(Daniel J. Siegel's Definition of Mind "The human mind is a relational and embodied process that regulates the flow of energy and information.")
