What would we call reality? Part 1
In 2017, a company called Epic Games launched a game based on the concept of virtual reality for Microsoft Windows. It was the best game of that year. The youth of all Europe was crazy about this game. 'Game Informer Magazine' gave the game the 'best virtual reality game' award of that year. The name of this great and popular game was 'Robo Recall.'

In this game, with the help of virtual reality, a virtual world is created for the user with the help of computer technology. The user feels that he is living in the actual world, which is, in reality, a virtual world created through technology. Through virtual reality, the user is not only hooked on the screen but also feels the virtual world which he has become part of.
Robo Recall created a virtual world in which the player who would be playing the game would become the part of that game, that virtual world. To play this game, the player only needed a 'virtual reality (VR) headset.' Soon after putting on the VR set, the game would start, and the player playing game would become Agent 34, in that new virtual world.
In this game, a mission was defined for the player at the beginning of the game. The player had to defeat the robots gathering around him. The game was designed in such a way that the player would become the part of that virtual world. This game seemed so real that people used to play this game for hours. They used to become part of that virtual world, which was constructed with virtual reality.
In the beginning, games based on virtual reality were made for entertainment. Gradually, it became a flourishing business. The only goal of this business was to make the player addictive for the game. The companies making such games soon achieved this goal. Very soon, such games were played throughout the whole world to get rid of the problems of real life, to forget the reality of life, and to become the heroes of the virtual world.
We can distinguish between reality and the virtual reality because virtual reality, and we are different, and it makes sense to us eventually. For virtual reality, we have to play that game, need to wear that VR headset, and buy that software or game in the first place. All these things indicate that now we are moving from reality to virtual reality — our real-world, where we live and the virtual world is different.
But now the question is: does that what we call reality or our real-world really real? Or is it also a kind of virtual reality which we have devised for ourselves? Is this world, which we call real, really the real one or a virtual one? In short, how real is the reality, as we conceive it?
Let me explain this with an example. There is a species of butterflies, which is known by the name 'Painted Lady.' This butterfly uses its antennae to sniff and smell. To taste the food, it uses its feet. For hearing, it uses its wings. It has more than 30,000 lenses in its eyes, and these lenses function like a kaleidoscope.
The way this butterfly experiences this world can be completely different from our experience of this world. Our reality & the reality of this butterfly is entirely different. So now the question is: which reality shall we call as reality?
As you already know that owls can see at night. Its eyes are completely round like a telescope. They function as an infrared camera. How owls are experiencing this world is completely different from the experience of our world. With this context, the reality for owl and reality for us can be tremendously different. So now, the question is, which reality shall we call reality?
In short, the way an owl or a butterfly is experiencing the world is totally different from the way we are experiencing the world. Therefore, the reality of a butterfly is completely different from the reality of an owl, and the reality of an owl can be completely different from the reality of humans.
It also means that there is no fixed reality here. Using our senses (sniffing, seeing, touching, tasting and hearing – we as human beings), we create our own reality. Therefore, we would never be able to experience the world the way an owl is experiencing. The way a butterfly can enjoy the smell of a flower, we can never even understand it.
In short, our senses define our reality. So, can we call it the reality which is under control of our sense? It simply means that what we call reality is also a kind of virtual reality because it is varying as per our senses. The quality of sensory acuity defines that type of reality a person would experience.
Scientists proclaimed that there are certain types of insects who take five seconds to notice the light that hits their eyes. Suppose, as if you are standing in front of the insect, to register this, that insect needs five seconds. If that insect is looking at you and you go to and fro in the next five seconds, then this insect will not even understand that you have moved. Because it has created your one frame in five seconds, but for creating the second frame, it needs another five seconds; in that time, if you move in and out, then the insect will not even understand it. If you come back on the same spot again, then for that insect, the reality will be like you are always standing there.
So what is the reality? Is your going in & coming out real or from the insect's perspective you didn't move at all real?
Now you think: who would we call reality? Aren't we also living in virtual reality? How much reality is there in what we call reality?
We will discuss this subject in detail in the next blog.
